URGENT PRODUCT RECALL: SMA Infant formulas

There is an urgent voluntary product recall affecting specific batches of SMA infant formula and follow-on formula due to the potential presence of cereulide. Please refer to this UK recall notice for affected products and batch numbers, the only prescribed product is SMA Alfamino (3rd line AAF)

Key points to note:

• Affected batch details are listed in the associated recall notice.
• Unaffected SMA Alfamino stock is available, but it has not yet reached the pharmacy wholesaler (Alliance).
• Alliance has today been instructed to destroy all affected stock, and there will be a “firebreak” period before new stock is supplied.
• Approximately 150 patients in HWE are prescribed SMA Alfamino. Communication to GP practices will begin tomorrow.

• Stop using affected batches immediately.
• Prescribe 1st line – Nutramigen Puramino or 2nd line – Neocate LCP as alternative products. (See CMPA Guidance )
